Think i have been really busy and when i am not busy i am feeling lazy. It has been a while since i last updated my blog. It is not that i am food deprived or anything like that, i wish i am food deprived and not eating so much.. it is more like i am kind of lazy to lug my camera around and take photos. Most of the time, I am just clicking away with my iphone. Hmm so what have i been busy chomping lately? This week alone i went to Swa Gardens for Teochew food, Bedrock for steak, some chocolate place at 313 for cakes, seventh heaven for 12 scoops of ice cream, Charlie Ts for Chicken, Empire State for more chicken and brownie ice cream, Imperial treasures for dinner on thurs and for lunch today, Spruce at One Rochester. I need to stop eating... uh well.. anyway here are some food photos taken from my iphone... and i do have many more which i was too lazy to even whip up my phone.. ayee... It is time to bring the camera out for a walk...

Had lunch with mama at Ootaya this afternoon. There wasnt a queue unlike what has been read in many reviews of the place. Maybe because we were there at 1230, the crowd started streaming in at 1pm.

I had the popular Hokke or rather the Charcoal grilled Atka Mackerel while mama had the Torotoroni (Scallop with rice and Chicken n Touf fu soup)

Hokke: I really didnt like this. It was over grilled, resulting in it being burnt, not slightly burnt but really black. Hmm wonder if it is meant to be this way, i doubt so. Or maybe the skin was not meant to be eaten, eat at your own risk, your own cancer risk! It was also a rather salty slab of fish. It is almost impossible to eat it on its own. Then again I do have very little tolerance of salt. At $17, it is certainly not worth it, especially if you compare it with the scallop rice that my mum had at the same price.

The accompany sides:

This is my mama's food. The Torotoroni. This is the scallop rice that is heated over a block of solid fuel. It kept the rice and scallop pipping hot! The miso sauce topping adds a sweet and salty flavour to the rice. Very good!

The very tasty and flavourful soup. The pieces of chicken were tender and tasty. My mama especially liked the soft and silky toufu. For me I love the eggy taste of the soup.

This has got to be the Best Lor Mee in Singapore. Thick glooey gravy with ample crispy ingredients. Fantastic with lots of vinegar, chili and garlic! Comes in 3 sizes, $2.50, $3 and $3.50

Check out the really really long queue! I think we waited about 30 minutes for our bowl of lor mee. Do you spot AMK in the middle of the queue?

Had brunch at Si Chuan Dou Hua, Plaza Parkroyal. Hmm was a so-so experience, not fantastic, we had a $50 voucher so well, no complains, but i guess crystal jade is a better bet for dim sum, cheaper too! If not then Lei Garden or Wah Lok.

Just one of those rare random thoughts posting. Its Friday, my favourite day of the week. Waiting for time to pass so that i can get ready to head to town to meet some friends. Actually I hate going down to the city on Friday at peak hour, it is always so jammy, and i feel like I'm wasting my precious time being stuck in the jam. But then again, i hate being stuck at home on Friday more, so I will brave the jam and head down to town later.

Its nice and quiet here at my work desk, so nice and quiet that i am in one of the rare mood to blog about... well... random stuff. This is meant to be a Food only blog, but then again, once in a while i guess its okay to add some randomness in my life. I love random things, random people, random events. Which is why i enjoy getting lost. Okay, not really enjoy getting lost, but i dont mind getting lost, be it when i am driving or when i am just walking around random places. And i enjoy the whole process of getting lost when I have nothing else better to do. Gosh this post of mine is getting nowhere. It is LOST!

I am lost! uh oh... ha then again whats new. Like my dear friend used to ask me 'why are u always so lost' and my favourite phrase was 'i dont know' till she kicked the bad habit of mine away. I remember i used to say 'i dont know' to everything so that I dont have to think of anything, and everything could be answered with a simple 3-word phrase 'i dont know' but i guess its a bad habit. My brain was so lazy because of that, then again, it is still lazy nw.

As i sit at my work desk and i looked around, i realise that I'm going to miss many things here. My desk definitely, but really more the people around. Never really appreciated what is around me, in fact I have never pause for a moment to look at what is around me, life is more about running here and there, getting work done, meeting deadlines, trying not to thread on too many toes.

The people around, yes I am going to miss the people around me. My colleagues of whom some have became friends. But strangely i realise I'm going to miss most, the little people around me. The little people who have quietly creeped into my life without me knowing. I realised how much these little people meant to me when i pace up and down their room, wondering how they are feeling, are they happy? are they sad? are they disappointed? are they being too hard on themselves? haii thats why sometimes I think all of us need to maintain some form of detachment to people. I forgot to stretch out my arms and keep these people at arms' length, it is going to be quite painful to see them go. It is strange how comfortable you can be with these people, how you do not need to constantly put up a facade in front of these people, and how you enjoy the company of these people.
I wish i am good with words, I wish i can tell these people how much they meant to me and how much i really appreciate them, but... well.. me being me... nothing ever comes out right when it is translated to words. K maybe next time. but then again, we all know the 'next time' wldnt come by.

Hop to malacca for a 2 days 1 night Makan tour. It was an eat eat eat till you drop food trip with the entire clan.
Set off from Golden Mile at 830 am.
First stop Yong Peng. Shared the Yong Tau Food amongst the 3 of us. Had to save our yummy tummy for the goodies in Malacca.

Arrived in Malacca, Equatorial Hotel at about 2pm. After the check-in, with great determination and focus, the 13 of us, together with AMK in the pram, march to the Jonkers Street area for our lunch. Had lunch at Pin Pin Hiong, beside the Orang Utan House at Jln Tukang Besi.

Yet another round of buffet. I dont know why this buffet is so popular, it is certainly not worth paying $30 for hawker food. Nevertheless it was extremely crowded, they dont take reservation, so you need to queue and pay before you are seated. Hmm but anyhow, at the end of the day, I love buffet for the company I'm with, I love shopping for food, eat and eat and eat, talk and talk and talk, laugh and laugh and laugh. Run out of topic to talk about, go and grab more food. =)

Gosh I should be sleeping and not be thinking of food at 2am! I think i am deprived of good food. Oh no.. i am now feeling guilty for saying that. Just think about it millions of people die of starvation each year and every 6secs, someone in this world is dying of starvation. Time to ignore my guilt:

I love food, for without food, i am but an empty sad soul! Now what are my comfort food, what makes me happy? simple, comfort food that is usually carbo-laden. Sometimes i wish I am a sumo wrestler, so I have no choice but to load myself with food n well i do not have to worry about being fat, cos being fat is my profession. Can you imagine? A professional Fatty? I wld love that!

I love: not in order of preference cos that would be too difficult to rank, it varies with mood
1) Eggs - all kinds of eggs, if i am a sumo, i would be able to eat eggs eggs eggs n more eggs. I love egg yoke especially. I love half boil egg, hard boil egg, omelete, scrambled eggs, century eggs, tea leaves eggs, sunny side-up eggs, stew eggs!
2) Handmade noodles (as in you mian)
3) Unagi
4) Chicken (in any form - roast, bbq, steam, grilled, boiled)
5) Teo Chew porridge
6) Cereal with cold milk
7) Noodles (mee sua, mee hoon, mee pok, kway teow)

Back to Honjin... think this must be the 4th time here. It is not fantastic, the quality is inconsistent, but i guess the 1 for 1 buffet gimmick is enough to tempt me. Like the Pig said, it is not really the food that is good, but it is just fun choosing food and eating as much as I want. In fact i think the best dish and most consistent dish here is the erm... watermelon and orange slices! k but nevertheless what keeps us coming back for more is the free flow unagi and salmon! Anyway having said this, i shall give credit to the company that never fail delight me. Sometimes good company automatically bring about good food!

And finally, something that i have always wanted to try cos well... i am attracted to anything that has a raw egg as a topping. This is my beef curry rice with egg! The first few bites were yummy and it is especially good if you like gooey, soft, baby food... like me =) but i got kind of hot and tired eating it after a while. Hot because it was served in a stone bowl that kept the rice warm till the last few bites... Hmmm maybe i should buy a stone bowl cos i absolutely love my food HOT! The only thing about this rice dish is that it is deceivingly fatty! the beef pieces were all lined with thick layers of fats, but you cant really see it cos it is a mess of chessy, glooey, brown curry sauce. Nevertheless, I love beef fats! but of course not too much!

Had Dim Sum at Imperial Nanbei. I must say i love the dim sum here, they serve unique Dim Sum. one of the best places for dim sum in the east.

Had been craving for Song fish head with black bean sauce for quite sometime, so i had to order when i saw this.

Wanted to order the la mian, but it wasnt ready so we change it to black pepper Udon with chicken pieces

We were not very full so we ordered another rice dumpling to share. Very yummy but a little oily, felt abit jerlat after the meal. Nevertheless a very good bean dumpling!

The Thai Table

Passed by Thai Table the other day to do take-away Pad Thai, told myself I would have to come back soon to try the food. I need to support Thai restaurants that are coming up near my place so that I could satisfy my Thai food craving as and when it comes knocking at my tummy again. If you have read some of the older posts, you would probably have guessed that my latest food craze is Thai food. K anyway 3 days later and here I am at Thai Table, a 2 months old Thai restaurant near Simpang Bedok. We ordered the set dinner for 2 at $30 and we added $3 for a glass of ice lemongrass tea and a red ruby dessert.

This is the complimentary keropok, unlike most places, this is free!

Our first dish was the Chicken Feet Salad. I liked the chicken feet salad. The chicken feet has a nice bite to it and the sauce that accompany the salad had the right amount of sourness and spiciness.

Next was the Tom Yum soup, we requested for the version without coconut milk. I think i would prefered it if it was clearer like the kind you find in Thai Express. There seems to be a hint of tomato in this version. Maybe some would prefer this, but I like my Tom Yum soup with a more obvious taste of Lemongrass and Kaffir Lime leaves and without the sweetness of maybe tomato? Maybe they have adjusted the taste to suit Singaporeans.

The Olive Rice was not bad. In fact i thought it was the best dish.

Next up, mince pork with basil. It was okay if it is eaten together with white rice or even the olive rice, but on its own, it is way too salty, the chef probably added too much soya sauce or fish sauce. An improvement that could be made is by adding more basil leaves. If not it would be just ordinary mince pork.

Sambal Long beans: Am not a fan of long beans so i cant comment much.

The last dish was the Chili Prawns. The chili used for the prawns seems to be similar to the one used in the Sambal Long beans... hmmm but well nevertheless it is quite okay. We felt that since there were 2 of us, they should have either given us 2 prawns or 4 prawns. 3 seems to be an awkward number.

Finally dessert: Red Ruby. Aye once again, the can coconut milk taste spoil this Thai dessert. I know it is troublesome to have freshly squeeze coconut, but using can coconut milk really spoils the food. Can coconut milk has a weird distinctive smelly coconut oil taste. Hmm not sure if you get what i mean.. but uh well... it is good if one cant tell the difference.

Overall experience: Not bad, I think it still suffers from some teething problems and is constantly improving based on customers feedback. I gave my feedback about the Basil pork and the Red Ruby, hopefully they would look into it. Service was excellent and attentive. Impressive! I would go back again to give my support for my local community Thai food resturant cos i really do not want to see it fall due to lack of business. This place is one whom i can drop by easily to do take-a-way pad thai and fried rice!

Big D's Grill revisited

First time visiting Big D's after it had made the move to Holland Drive.
I had the buah Keluak while wei had the Kurabuta pork. We decided to order the Chap Chye to share. Alas I was disappointed, very disappointed with the Buah Keluak. Okay to be fair maybe it was just me, I was not used to the taste, much prefer my mama version of Buah Keluak. The Buah Keluak at Big D's just didnt hit it for me, it is too sweet and there was a hint of coconut, I may be wrong about the 'hint of coconut' but there is just someting that is not right for me. Doesnt have that strong distinctive taste of Buah Keluak. But i guess whatever it is, for $12.90, there was quite a substantial amount of Buah Keluak. We all know that making Buah Keluak is alot of hard work, so well for $12.90 it is quite worth it. But really... it was too sweet! Maybe it would have been better if it was Sambal Ayam Buah Keluak? Instead of a heavy dose of just the nut?
K i shall stop rambling on about Buah Keluak.

I took a cut off Wei's Kurabuta Pork, and i must say i still love it. Tender, sweet (as in meat sweet n not sugar sweet) and juicy. Love the glistening fats that comes coated with the pork. Very nicely grilled, still pinkish n pretty.

Chap Chye was ok. Pretty normal, very home-cooked. But Wei didnt like it, said was too salty. I felt it was kinda overcooked, mashy. BUt yeah... there are many ppl who like chap chye that way.

Because of the unsatfisfying meal and as fate would have it, the XO fishhead staff walked pass our table n i decided to conveniently order a bowl of fish soup. Now.... this is what i call satisfying... This XO fishhead soup really live up to its name, and it still remains as the best fishhead soup in Singapore. Love the obvious, distinctive hint of brandy!

Oh yesh! n guess who was came along and sat beside us during our meal?? Bobby Chinn from World Cafe Asia!!!! haa if only he could erm recruit me and get me to be his food taster. U know like go around the world to reccee the place n eat?

Yeah we did strike up a mini conversation like this:

Me: Oh yeah the chap chye is not from the fishhead stall, it is from Big D.
Bobby: ok (ordered his fish head soup and went to Big D to order chap chye)
Wei and I: (after he ordered his chap chye) Oh actually the chap chye is not very good!
Bobby: Oww why didnt u say so earlier! it cost be $12.90!

Skipped to Mei Tai Ramen quite a few months back for its famous bowl or Ramen. This is the menu... apparently it uses some pork bone as stock for the soup. Brewed for many many hours.

Here is my yummy bowl of Ramen. It is good! very delicious. Love the soup base.

Ms Sit had craving for Thai food, it was either First Thai or Yhingthai along Purvis St, consulted hungrygowhere, and the vote was cast, we decided to opt for Yhingthai as it has higher rating. Actually we ate this a long long time ago, but i was too lazy to blog hence it is only after 3 months that this is here! So anyhow, i kinda have forgotten how the dishes taste. All i can conclude is that this outlet has got to be one of the best Thai restaurants I have been in Singapore!

The Padthai here is of course much better than Thai Express.

Green Curry Chicken, never liked green curry cos of the heavy coconut taste. And the pieces of chicken in the curry is kinda pathetic. Still prefer the indian version of curry chicken where you get solid parts of the chicken and not small pathetic pieces. ($15 for small)

The Olive Rice was very very good, very fragrant, not too salty, one of the best I have eaten. ($20 for medium)

The stuffed chicken wing was really good, filled with lots of stuffing like mushrooms and asparagus. Served really hot. But of course this doesnt come cheap at $3 per piece.

Tom Yum Soup with coconut and Clear Tom Yum Soup ($6 per bowl). I very much preferred the clear tom yum soup. Hot and Fiery, wonderful taste of lemongrass. I think i could just go there especially for the clear tom yum soup. Mama would truly love this.

Fish maw soup ($8), another recommended dish, but as i am not a fan of fish maw, so this soup is kind of forgettable. Okay but i am sure my mama would love it too.

Mango salad. Quite a unique dish.

This is a strange dish recommended by the waitress. Erm strange weird name too. This dish is called Condiments. It is some ikan bilis, small shrimps, mango, chili padi and onion on top of a leaf. U roll the leaf up together with the condiments and dip it into the bowl of chili. Unique and refreshing taste.

Overall experience, I love this place, would definitely come again. In fact after the dinner the first thing that came to my mind was that I need to give my mama a treat here soon! So fat boy, if u are reading this, lets treat fat mama to this place soon!

First Thai Food

Had a quick dinner with the Owl at First Thai, a corner coffee shop along Purvis Street.
This is our first dish, Olive rice. Not bad, love the taste of olive.

Next up was the Tom Yum Soup. i love the spiciness of this mean bowl of soup and the sourness is just nice for me.

Basil Pork: I always love basil pork or basil anything. Love the fragrance of the basil leaves. Too bad it was way too salty and we had to order a bowl of white rice just to go with the dish.

This Seafood Otah was my favourite dish of the night! Dont know why, but i just love it. Maybe I just love otah in general. =)

Had Thai express before running off to catch CATS. Think i told myself and another friend before that i would never ever eat at Thai Express again, but as always, when i have to catch something at Esplanade, there is not much choices so ... yet again Thai Express. Anyway I was also craving for Thai food, so uh well, no harm breaking my promise. SO here is what we had:
Tom Yum Soup to share, it looks deceptively innocent, but it is one mean fiery bowl of soup. I kinda like the fact that it is so overpoweringly spicy!

Next up my main: Tom Yum Hor Fun. I love this simply because it is spicy. I think i just love the taste of tom yum with the fragrant taste of lemon grass and kaffir leaves. Hmm but i really cant quite comprehend why cooks are always frying cuttlefish in such a way that it is too chewy and unfriendly to the jaws.

Came here for this thick broth of crab bee hoon soup. Owl and I are not crab people, to us, the effort that goes into digging the flesh is not worth the taste. But well as both of us are uninspired as to where to head to for dinner, here we are at Uncle Leong.

Once again, here we are at Taste Paradise. Thanks to M, we got a delicious treat!

Next up the Famous XO carrot cake. It is available for $1 if you spend more than $100 on the total bill. I love the soft and mushy carrot cake, it is of course unlike what you get in hawker centres where you can hardly taste the white carrot. The carrot cake here has a distinctive carrot taste and it is nicely fried with XO sauce.

Next up the Peking Duck. Also another lunch time promotion. $28 for the duck. Guess most would consider $28 as rather worth it, but I'm not a fan of duck nor duck skin, so well... and with just the 3 of us, it can get quite boring eating slabs and slabs of duck skin.

Next up is what we came for, yes yes as with previous post, this is certainly the highlight of the meal. I admit that theoretically I have sworn off shark's fin, but once in a while, i break my 'vow' by indulging in a superb bowl of soup. Hmmm if only someone could replicate the taste without using shark's fin. I am sure it is possible, shark's fin itself is probably tasteless.

okay this may seem really offensive to people who ban shark's fin in their tummy. Sorry guys! I am really trying to stay clear of those fins!

Next up a toufu dish, toufu with mushroom and scallop. Nothing fantastic, although the scallop sauce was pleasant, but the toufu was rather disappointing. Worse than many zi char stall i would say.

The final meal before desserts was a bee hoon dish, fried with the meat of the Peiking duck. Also another disappointing dish. Then again maybe because we were too full to find pleasure in it.

Finally desserts: We had the almond cream in papaya and avocado cream with walnut ice-cream. Take my advice, just stick to the avocado cream next time. The almond cream and previously the mango cream that I had is nothing to rave about. The avocado cream on the other hand is very unique, the walnut ice-cream and avocado cream is indeed a perfect match.

Had a good meal with wonderful company at Porkee - Tiong Bharu.

This is my favourite dish! Taste very much like well marinated piece of char siew! Really love it! =) In fact I am craving for it now this very moment! SHIOK!

This is the steam fish in thai sauce. Very obliging staff who changed the fire 2 times cos we were slow in devouring the fish and we wanted to keep the fish warm. In addition, we asked for 3 more helping of the thai fish 'soup'. Love the taste of the lemon grass and the wolfberries in the sauce.

Once again, here i am at my favourite restaurant, Sushi Tei for its melt-in-your mouth, ever lovely unagi roll. But of cos other than Unagi roll, we had other dishes too. But it is alway the same old unagi roll n sashimi salad that is a MUST for us.

Had a rather delicious, scrumptious dinner at En Dining. A Japanese Ala-Carte buffet outlet which serves food of rather high standard, even the presentation was pleasant for a buffet restaurant.
Of course we had more food than this, but well... decided to stop taking photos and start enjoying my food!

This is one of the cold dish that we had, century egg cold toufu. Very refreshing as an appetizer, and it is very eggy. Century eggs lover will definitely love this dish!

The sashimi was very fresh and slices of salmon were thick.

This is the beef carpaccio which is not bad. In fact this is my first time eating beef carpaccio.

Bittergourd with egg, nothing spectacular, was curious so wanted to try it out

OOooo this has got to be my favourite dish of the night. It looks rather ordinary but looks can be deceiving! This is the ungai fried rice, the unagi in the rice really enhances the flavour of the rice. Very addictive dish, in fact it was this dish that fills me up big time cause i couldnt stop eating it. Maybe that was the intention, give you a very good rice dish and fill you up so that you will stop eating other more expensive dishes.

Went for the Hi-Tea at Zhou Kitchen, it is pretty worth it, but there were many people, the food orders can get really slow and some didnt even have the opportunity to make an appearance on our table. Anyway not much comments about the food, overall was okay. $12.80 +++, total bill ended up at about $20 including the drinks etc that is not included in the buffet.

Met friend at Holland V for another pig out session. Decided to have pho cos it is supposed to be healthy! BUT of cos i was wrong again, the bowl of beef pho that i ordered was rather fatty and oily. Oh it is of no one's fault but mine, I wanted to be greedy and decided that I should order the most extensive bowl of beef pho with the tripe, brisket, beef flank, beef ball etc etc. SO yes! end product was a rather oily but yummy bowl of pho. The humble calamansi of course added to the fragrance, the aroma of the wonderfully flavoured bowl of pho. Actually when it comes to pho i really cant tell a bad one from a good one. WHY? cause the amount of calamansi and basil leaves that i request for basically mask the taste of its original flavour. Moreover Pho Hoa provides cut chili padi which steers away from the typical pho that you get in vietnam, especially if you are like me who relish on chili padi! Well.. in this age of globalisation, i decided to 'localised' a global food - pho - by adding my chili padi

Fren had the dry vermicelli with grilled chicken, cant rem what is it called in Vietnamese. Anyway according to her it is not bad, but the chicken is a little too dry and tough.

Oh and how can i forget my avocado shake. K i am now into the avocado shake craze cos apparently avocado is good for the skin, the face =) BUT i must say the best avocado shake i have tried is the one at ALexander Village, Mr Avocado.

SO here begins my weeklong of feasting! too bad only have photos for this, the rest of the places are just waaaaayy too dark =( what a pity!
The only good thing was that there is a 20% discount with civil service club!
Everything can be described in one word, SALTY!

the butter squid which was highly recommended by reviewers was very salty, maybe becos of the salted egg yolk, but nevertheless it is too salty, especially since we did not have white rice to go with it, we had the olive rice instead.

The broccoli with crab was also very salty =/ I mean it isnt too bad, but well, just too salty for our tastbuds.

Honey chicken: too dry and tough, nothing special

Herbal frog leg was so-so, not fantastic, tasted much better herbal soup even in coffeeshops.

We had the toufu with golden mushroom instead of the recommended toufu with chicken floss, maybe we should have gone with whatever that was recommended, but wanted something lighter, not fried, so opted for the golden mushroom, it is again a rather ordinary dish.

Pad Thai: also not very good, tasted more like normal fried kway teow/mee/kway teow goreng.. whatever, it resembles nothing like the Thailand version of padthai. Maybe because it is too sweet, too much ketchup? Well one thing is they should have used the thai lime instead of the usual small dark green lime. I think the thai lime would have given it a distinctive fragrance.

Finally Olive rice: For $1 what more can i ask for? it is not bad i must say, although no taste of olive, but for $1 it is a steal! I like the idea of having mince meat at the side to complement the rice.

Maybe maybe I would go back again someday and give it a second chance, maybe maybe maybe it was just today that the food somehow just wasnt able to live up to expectations.

Was at Simpang Bedok for lunch. Had Tze char at 2 stalls, the Simpang Kitchen - Simpang Bedok Food Centre 02-03 and a Thai Fish Maw and Tom Yam Food stall 02-12.
Here is what we had from Simpang Kitchen - Fried garlic sotong ($8) and butter pork ribs ($10). The fried garlic sotong is certainly the highlight of the meal, eat it while it is hot, after a while due to our high humidity, the garlic loses its crispiness. Very yummy dish that lands you with garlic breath. The butter pork ribs on the other hand was rather ordinary.

Basil Pork rice - Was quite disappointed in this dish, doesn't really have the basil taste which I love.

After our guided tour at Chek Jawa, the party of famished wolves decided to eat our dinner at Pulau Ubin.

Here is our first course... Mee Goreng. Well it is alright i guess, a little tasteless or rather the only distinctive taste was the spiciness of the noodles. Nevertheless i was hungry and i wouldnt mind any form of carbo.

Our steamed fish which was ok.
The party agree that this common dish of kailan was the most delicious of our meal.
The crab itself was not too bad, quite solid, comes with lots of roe and it was quite fleshy. My favourite part of the crab has to be the yummy shell!
This is the ginger sesame Kampong Chicken. This chicken dish is blend, very blend. The chicken meat was tasteless and well because it is a kampong chicken, it is a very skinny chicken.
Our last dish was the fried prawn roll 'har zuo', well i thought that was good! unfortunately my fingers were goey, disgusting and oily, sadly i cant capture a photo of the prawn roll.

Treated mum to Taste Paradise during the festive season. This is the free appetizer - mayonnaise prawns. The sauces that were served to us were something like green ginger sauce, reminds me of chicken rice and 'her bee hiamp' - 'shrimp chili'. The ginger sauce was impressive and addictive!
We ordered 2 set lunches, with an addition of the highly recommended XO carrot cake. Definitely one of the best carrot cake i have eaten, the taste of carrot was discernible with the first bite. Not your usual $2 carrot cake where all you could taste is lard and flour, then again it is $7 compared to the usual $2 in hawker centre. Carrot cake is fried with beansprouts and chinese sausages with a tinge of wok hei. I would certainly recommend this if there are more people to share, but for just the 2 of us, i think it is a little bit too much with our set lunch.

The first course of the meal. Peking Duck, wasabi prawns with watermelon and pan seared foie gras. We were told to eat in the sequence of foie gras, peiking duck and finally Wasabi Prawns. Hmmm then again it has been a while, maybe i got the sequence mixed up, uh well... I realise i am not a fan of foie gras it is too rich for my tastebud.

Yup this is the piece of foie gras, looks kind of burnt but certainly seared to the right texture. Crispy on the outside and soft and mushy on the inside. I am a lover of pig liver, chicken liver, duck liver but Goose liver is just to gamely for me...
This piece of wasabi prawns on top of a piece of watermelon is my favourite, definitely refreshing after the foie gras.

This is the PeKing duck. Not very impressive. A tad to dry.

This is definitely the highlight of the meal! And it is also why i decided to bring my mum here even though i have made the promise to myself to swear of Sharks' Fin. So really no offence to the conservationist out there... but this is the BEST bowl of Shark Fins soup i have ever eaten. I am sure that the 'power' of this soup isnt the result of the Shark Fins but hours and hours of simmering chicken bones, pork bones and scallops. Actually if you taste it carefully, you would be able to tell that the predominate stock used is chicken bones!

Thick slabs of Sharks' Fins. Yes yes i am guilty.

Mum's meat dish was a piece of Cod fish which was so-s0.

I prefer my rack of lamb anytime.

Our last dish before dessert, abalone ramen. This i felt pales in comparison to the other dishes. In fact this dish is really the Anti-Climax of the meal. The meal would have ended on a better note if not for this noodles.

Mum's very yummy avocado cream. Very unique, I would recommend this over the mango cream which was rather ordinary.

This is the total damage. Definitely a good place to bring mama or grandma along. How i wish grandma was alive, she would definitely love this place. Afterall she is a hardcore fan of sharks' fin. Sorry once again to the conservationist out there!

This is our spontaneous, 'nuah' and 'eat air' trip to Desaru with Ms W, Ms S, Ms L and Mr L.

Our dinner stop is at a restaurant in Sungei Ringgit (30km from Desaru), recommended by the hotel staff at Pulai Desaru.

Our first course: Herbal Chicken Soup. We all agree that the soup would have been much better if they didnt add corn starch and let it remain as a clear soup. Courtesy of Mr L, I got the 'dark side' of the chicken which i love! My favourite part of the chicken-drumstick! The chicken looks nice yah?

The toufu dish was one of the recommended dish, not bad too! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside.
I love oat meal prawns, but somehow this is disappointing. Had a very buttery aftertaste that reeks of 'used oil'
Sambal Kang Kong, well you cant really go wrong with this if u have the right belachan.
The restaurant, or rather most seafood restaurants in Sungei Ringgit is famous for its lobster. Actually i wonder if they are really lobster or just different species of crayfish. Slipper lobster maybe? uh well... anyway we all agree that the lobster meat is QQ, fresh and i guess pretty worth it! =) I personally love the sauce, hmm wonder what has been added into it.
We had Orh Ngee for dessert, well in fact this is the only dessert in the restaurant. Really quite good, especially with pumpkin.

The satay was quite tasty, although it would have been better if the meat was thicker, more solid. Nevertheless i like the satay, maybe it is the marinate that gives it the yummy flavour.

Our egg, cheese, mushroom and onion roti prata that i felt was a disaster! the dough was wayyyyyy to thick! but then again with the amount of ingredients that go into the prata, it is no surprise that they had to make it this thick n large! next time i shall just stick to normal plain prata! sigghh n i tot jln kayu was famous for roti prata.

Once again... had to satisfy my craving for hand-made noodles, so whampoa here we come!

This is the Prawn bean flour noodles... hmm should have just stick to my usual yu mian. Bean flour noodles taste kinda weird, with a sweet tinge to it. Oh i added kidney to it, yummy, i love kidney.

This is the usual fish slice yu mian.

This is the soya bean stall from the same market. Very soft, smooth and silky bean curd. Bean curd is much better than the soya bean drink, soya bean drink taste normal, but the bean curd is simply wonderful! Better than rochor soya bean.

This is one hor fun that I have been eating since I was a little kid. Hong Lim market for me = to Crayfish hor fun. I remember I used to come here for this when I was a little kid. A generous portion of hor fun, crayfish and prawns for $4.

I must have said this before, this brand of bak chor mee 'Tai Wah' is my favourite bak chor mee stall. First time eating tai wah noodles at Hong Lim mkt. Not sure if this is related to the one at Crawford Lane, but it taste almost the same. The noodles that i had here was more al dente than the one at Crawford Lane. The other difference is that this one is cheaper than at Crawford Lane. Crawford Lane sells bak chor mee at $4, $5, $6. Hong Lim sells similar bak chor mee at $3, $4, $5.

If you are a big eater, go for the $5! The $3 one is way to little! The soup version here is also very good. Very very tasty, very fresh ingredients!

Very popular dinner place in the East: Feng Shan Market, Bedok North Blk 85.

This is from the BBQ stall, Lovely Seafood.

There are 3 bak chor mee (mince pork noodles) stalls that are very popular in the market, but apparently this is the original stall - Ah Poh bak chor mee. It is in the second row.. hmm or is it the third row? Uh well.. whatever it is, it is not the 2 stalls facing the main road. The story goes like this, Ah Poh used to be in the row facing the main road, but because it was making very good business, earning lots of $$$, the stall owner eyes got a little green and decided to raise the rental. He refuses to budge and pay more, so he moved to the back. On the other hand, the original stall was taken over by the owner who started his own bak chor mee.

This is from the Newton, Hokkien Prawn Mee stall. We thought it tasted a little bit too blend, too healthy!
Was deciding between having a plate of 10 chicken wings or a spring chicken. Decided on the latter, so here it is.
Aye, after consuming this poor spring chicken, we felt we should have ordered chicken wings instead. The breast meat of this little chicken is way to dry.
Our 30 sticks of satays, 10 chicken, 10 mutton, 10 pork. My favourite is the chicken satay. What i love most about this satay is the pineapple sauce that comes with the gravy.

Read a very positive, highly rated carrot cake stall from Ieatishoot blog, unfortunately we were sorely disappointed. The carrot cake was dry and too salty. Didn't have the ohhmp that I derive from some carrot cake.

oooo I love cold Ramen! Or rather Ramen in all forms! As long as there isnt any spring onions, bean sprouts and parsley.
Another of my die die must order in Sushi tei! This is even more 'die die' must order compared to the Soft Shell Crab handroll.

Love the carrot cake, beef noodles, chicken chop noodles, wanton mee, peanut pancake, bittergourd fishhead, tze char stall (at the other building - the more deserted one).

Anyway there were only 2 of us, so i could only order the carrot cake to share and the beef noodles for myself while Pig had the Nasi Lemak.

I like this very fragrant carrot cake, with its crunchy chai po and just the right amount of sweet sauce.

One of my favourite beef noodles stall, the gravy are unlike the ones that you get at some food court, starchy and msg-laden. This seems more 'real', more beefy. The only pity is that it doesnt have the thick bee hoon version, only kway teow, bee hoon and yellow mee. Since there is no thick bee hoon, my only option is kway teow... felt that the kway teow tends to be sticky, mushy n glooey with the dry version of the beef noodles. And especially for me, I tend to take some time removing the parsley and taking photos, by the time i decided to sink my teeth into my food, it is even stickier, mushier and 'glooeier'. Nevertheless, I love this bowl of beef noodles. Ahh for the record, i love beef noodles!

My all time favourite home made noodle aka 'ban mian, yu mian' stall! Both dry and soup version is fantastic, not the kind which leaves you thirsty n consume with msg taste!

Had the Fish slice Yu Mian, dry version, very powerful chili! Ikan Bilis is crispy n not as salty as what you get at some stalls. The noodles is springy, not like some places where it is a little too mushy. Fish slices are thick and fresh!

Usually I would have the dry version and friend would take the soup version, but today both of us had the dry version, so well... no photos of the soup version, was kind of tempted to go to the lady beside us and ask if i could capture a photo of her noodles!

Nice and cosy little place, in the corner of Rifle Range Road. This places feels like the kitchen of some Italian household. Food may not be the best, but i like the ambience. It would have been better if they didnt have the 2 seating policy where you have to dine between 600 to 830, 830 - 1030. So if i arrive at 730, i need to leave by 830? hmmm

This is my main, i should heed my friend's advice and stop trying to order weird food. K this is not exactly weird, but i really didnt like the mushy hand-made linguine. When the server came around to ask how was the food, i gave a weak smile n an 'ok' which of course wasnt very convincing so he asked what was wrong and i just had to tell him that the linguine was too mushy. Anyway he explained that all hand-made noodles cannot be done al dente. So well... what have i learnt? Never to order hand-made pasta anymore. Yes! i love hand-made ban mian, but no more hand-made pasta!
My friend ordered the stew pork linguine. Hmm eh friend! what is the exact name of your dish huh? anyway how was it? I think the stew pork was yummy, but after a while it is just too 'jerlat'

Hopped to Maxwell market for our favourite Tian Tian Chicken and Zhen Zhen porridge. Both stalls had long queue on a Saturday afternoon, had to queue up for about 20minutes for the half-chicken that we wanted and about 45minutes for the fish belly porridge.

Yummy yum yum. Actually it looks much better than it tastes, the magic of this chicken rice stall lies not really in the chicken but in the chilli sauce. As for the chicken i thought the margaret drive one is comparable to this. And yesh! i dont like my chicken deboned, unfortunately this plate of half-chicken we had was deboned.

We ordered the chicken without the rice cause we were planning to eat zhen zhen porridge, maybe it would do greater justice to Tian Tian if we were to eat the chicken with the rice.

It has been a long long loooong time since i last had my chicken rice fix. I used to love chicken rice, and of course I still do. But with all the bad publicity about how unhealthy, how fattening chicken rice is, I have stopped eating chicken rice for many years. The only chicken rice stall that I go to, if i ever have an intense craving for chicken rice is Tian Tian Chicken rice@maxwell market.

One fine Sunday... with mum, aunty, cousins and grandpa we decided to pay a visit to Sin Kee Famous Chicken rice at margaret drive, which is a stone throw away from where grandpa lives.

The first time we had ramen here was when the restaurant just opened. Really didn't like the previous try. The soup & egg were way too salty. Noodles I thought tasted more like wanton noodles, mee kia.

We decided that since this tiny restaurant in Central has received much raves and reviews from people, today shall be the day for second chance.

I asked for no spring onions, no coriander and in case they add any weird greens into my ramen i quickly added no 'anything green' probably i said it too fast, the waitress didnt hear me and here came my bowl of ramen with all the greens. Eeeks! i hate the overwhelming smell/taste of parsley, spring onions and coriander... i know it is mean, but i just had to send it back for a new bowl of 'no anything green' ramen.

Here... here is my new bowl of ramen. K that green thing that is peeking out from the soup is the seaweed. Yup they bothered to ask... so do you want seaweed? Yes! i love seaweed, no adverse reactions toward this 'green stuff'.Both of us ordered the house special, some 7 nut flavour soup, at $15 each bowl. I love the soup, especially with a tinge of the tangy lemon that comes with it. It is lighter, more refreshing and seems healthier than the usual pork-based soup that we are used to. Friend on the other hand prefers the Kyushu pork-based, milky collagen soup. Texture of noodles, i prefer the Kyushu region kind of ramen. I still maintain the stand that this type of ramen tastes too much like mee kia. This bowl of ramen comes with chicken balls, which we felt were too dry and tasteless. Give us back our usual fatty char siew anything!
This is the egg... a bit of a disappointment. Still prefer the one at Tampopo. Egg yolk too cooked, and the egg on the whole is too salty. I wonder why do they have to make it sooooo salty!

Will i be back? Certainly... Is it value for money? Definitely not. So why would i be back? I love ramen!

There are days I wonder why do i love ramen so much... a bowl of dry mee pok is much cheaper, more flavourful but....

Beyond the Usual

After Tampopo with The Owl on Friday, we went over to the Botanic Gardens. Our initial plan of the ZOO was spoilt by the weather. You know the constipated type where it looks like its going to rain, but it doesnt rain? Well so instead of heading to the zoo we went over to the Botanic Gardens after our meal. Had to digest our food and not feel so guilty after our carbo-loaded meal. Well we, or rather I concluded that the most eye-candy, pleasant looking thing in the Gardens was Allan Wu and his kids feeding the swans! Too bad, it was just unfortunate that I did not bring along my 18x zoom camera!!! SHUCKS!

After an hour of walking around the garden, the useless, fatty, piggy us headed down to Holland Village shopping centre for some window shopping and yes... food again!! Initially the plan was just to have a drink, then the Owl suggested finger food, but the finger food at Cafe 211 looks miserable, all deep fried food, so we decided on pizzas. I remembered cafe 211 having a 1 for 1 promotion for pizzas and pastas, so well in times of financial crisis we need to take advantage of promotion like that right? so yeah... had another pasta too... haiii pigg...

Sat: another beyond the usual day. Met L for tunch at pasta waraku. Wanted to head over to Valentino at Rifle Range but they were close, so we immediately made a reservation for the 29th October. Anyway after pasta waraku L was going for her painting class. I offered to send her there, only to be convinced, tempted by her offer of attending her painting class too!

Yes me! the one who hated Art lessons (second to Math), who remembers vividly horrors of painting apple during art lesson, who remembers getting hit on the knuckles with the teacher's 1 metre rule, the one who got a F for art, the one who gets laugh at when she attempts to draw trees, ox-bow lake, meander. Yup so here is my first time attempt on acrylic painting:

Went to tampopo twice in 2 weeks! First was with ah T n the second visit was with the Owl. Why do i love tampopo? Seriously I don't know. I think there are better ramen out there like, Ken Ramen, but still I find myself frequenting Tampopo. Anyway havent had the ramen craving for quite some time. But i am back with vengeance!

K anyway this was the Ramen I had with Ah T and little S last week. Original Black Pig Shabu-Shabu ramen. Mmmmm it is GOOD! I like milk-based pork bone ramen! Very flavourful! And the black pork is thinly-sliced, shabu shabu style, unlike the usual slab of char siew. The noodles is springy, but not too springy, just the way i like it. Ahh the highlight of the meal was the egg! You add $1.20 for the egg as it doesnt come with it. The egg is lightly flavoured with soya-sauce. Once you sink your teeth into it, the yellow, runny yoke would peeked out of the whites. Best Tamago amongst all the ramen joint!

I had the original Kyushu Ramen on my second visit to Tampopo with the Owl. Again milk-based pork bone ramen top with cod roe, a slab of char siew and an egg. I am a fan of Kyushu Ramen, dont really like the Hokkaido Ramen as much but I can't wait for my Hokkaido trip in Dec where i would go on a Ramen binge.

Skipped to Holland Village for lunch with a Japanese Food Crazy woman, here is what we had. And this is also what I ALWAYS order.

I simply cant resist it! I Love Unagi.
Sashimi platter. First time eating Otoro! Sushi Tei is having a promotion for this sashimi platter at $25. Lovely oily Otoro, Salmon Belly and Sword Fish! All my favourite!
Had the potato croquette, Opps forgot to take a photo before tucking into it.
Erm cant remember the name of this grilled fish. Whatever it is, if you are looking for grilled fish, just head to Sakuraya, fresher and certainly more satisfying.

And.............. within 3 hours, I am feeding again... this time round went to the other side of Singapore, Bedok South Market Opposite TJC for their fishball noodles. I am usually not a fan of fish ball noodles, but i kinda want something light and the fish soup stall was closed so... no choice... being a sucker for queue (well the mentality is if there is a queue it must be worthy of the tastbuds) so here I am eating the rather boring fishball noodles.
so is it worthy of the tastebud? no! The Kway Teow was mushy and glooey, the sauce was alright but should have asked for more vinegar (much more since we have already asked uncle to add more) Oh to be fair to the stall, the fishball was good, bouncy and yummy! Then again, hmmm i am not a very fishbally person. So yes, why did i even bother to patronise this stall.... the QUEUE!

There are days where all you feel like eating is good old hawker food. Here we are at Chinatown Food Centre - Smith Street.

Always start of with one of my favourite Chee Chong Fun and Yam Cake stall Jia Ji Mei Shi. I love the yam cake and the sweet sauce! The yam cake has a very distinctive taste, maybe a bit of a charred taste but i really cant make out what it is. As for the Chee Cheong Fun there is another stall which makes the Chee Chong Fun on the spot. It is tastier and smoother unfortunately can't seem to locate it today.

Had the Song Fish Head too, not bad =) I love song fish head, especially the fatty tummy area.
Queue up almost 30 min just to get my tongue on this ba chor mee. First time trying it though I have heard quite alot about it. Not too bad but Tai Wah at Crawford Lane is still the best!!

After the pigging out session at Chinatown, we went to watch Mama Mia, I must say it is pretty entertaining but of course I am bias towards the show cause i simply love ABBA songs! The only gripe I have though is of course Pierce Bronson playing the lead actor! I think he should just stick to his suave, cool, handsome, calm and compose persona in movies like James Bond. He looks really awkward and stiff acting in a musical and erm he cant dance... he is certainly not a 'dancing king'. I cringe when he broke into a song. simply a weird feeling. Meryl Streep on the other hand put up a relatively commendable performance.

Was up battling scripts of papers with my trusty red pen till the wee hours of the morning and since it was already 430am I decided that I shant go to bed and I should stay up updating my blog and at 530 I could fetch my mum to the market. Yes yes my mum goes to market very early in the morning so that she could her a precious Ikan Kurau filet.

Of course a trip to the market would comprise of breakfast - My favourite meal of the day.

Our last lunch in HCM at Wrap and Roll. Another one of those sterile places serving Vietnamese food with a twist. Our first dish, yummy sotong!

Yup! this is an example of a plate of grass that annoyingly appears on our table every meal!
ahhhh very addictive fruit shake! so addictive that I crave for it the moment i step out of the shop. In the words of piggy 'you have been whining about wanting to drink fruit shake after we left [wrap and roll'
Vietnamese wrap with a fusion twist. Looks like chee cheong fun! This ought to be my favourite, the chee cheong fun skin is so thin and smooth that it slithers down your throat! Perfect skin is what makes a good chee cheong fun, not the fillings!
It seems weird without some carbo, so I had to order a plate of fried rice. This place dont serve noodles, if not it would have been a bowl of pho!
We seem barbaric eating so much compared to the other tables. We attracted stares and dagger eyes from others either because of the amount of food we ate or because of our irritating laughters. Piggy kept complaining that I am a messy eater and I had to defend myself that she was no better in terms of dining etiquette. If you could catch a glimpse of her 'veryyy clean' plate, she irritatingly vacuum up every morsel of food on her plate in contrast to my extremely 'messy' plate of wasted food.

After lunch, yet again we went for a walk and ended up at the Tax Dept store, formerly known as Russian market. This is the street that we went up and down several times hunting for food and places of interests.

Ended our trip with a visit to the War Museum. Whether or not you are a museum person, i really think this is a must-see in HCM. At least it gives you a glimpse into the recent history of Vietnam. I guess at the end of the day, no matter where you visit, no matter how boring or interesting a place is, it is important to catch a glimpse of the culture, history and yes Geography of a place so that you can leave a place with the brain feeling a little bit more enriched.

Having said that this is a must-see in HCM, I really have to add that this museum can be highly bias and in many ways propaganda in nature. Bearing in mind that this museum was set up by the government just a few months after the Vietnam war, and the purpose was probably to unite the Vietnamese and promote a political cause that Northern Communist government is here to save the country from the ruthless, violent Americans. It was a glaring one-sided view of the Vietnam War. Nevertheless it tells us how at the end of the day, no one benefits from a war and the ones who suffer the most are the civilians.
It is a museum with many photographic exhibits of the war taken by local and foreign correspondents. It is really quite stomach-churning seeing the photographs. Really very sad =(

Vietnam - Ho Chin Minh Part 3

Day 2 begins with a tour of Mekong Delta...

Our first stop - honey making farm?! erm but then again it is really not exactly a farm, we were herd into a little hut to drink honey. erm so where are the bees? I don't know...
Next stop, making of coconut candy. I was reluctant to try cos i never like coconut-based candy but well it turned out not too bad, the candies were nice and warm, freshly made. Tip: never ever buy anything from touristy places like that, just pop over to supermarkets or any markets and you will probably get it at a much cheaper price!

Dragon fruit plant! Pitaya or Dragonfruit as it is commonly known, is a cactus. The flowers bloom only at night. I guess they are creepers that creeps onto the host plant, depending on it for support. Errmmm when i took the photo, the dragonfruit was seated comfortably on the tree... I suspect (should have gone to touch it!) it was placed there by the people for the sake of us tourist. The fruit should rightfully be hanging off the leaves
Next stop: went on a row boat through the little stream.
Lunch, rice with pork chop. And with this it marks the end of a tourist trap!
Dinner at Quan An Ngon, apparently it is a must-try for all first time visitors to HCM. They have a branch in Hanoi too. It is street food in a sterile environment, very popular with both tourists and locals and of course locals with foreign friends! When we left at about 7 plus, the place was packed! Well... i think it is a good introduction to Vietnamese food, as to whether or not the food is good, I really wouldn't know cos it is veggies and veggies and more raw veggies... so i can be highly bias when i have to consume or even just set my eyes upon mountains of greens!
This is mince beef on sugar cane. Well in most cases in Singapore, I would have happily eaten the meat off the sugar cane, full stop. But here in HCM, we were introduced the proper way of eating (oh yes, there is a lady who had to teach us 'how to eat'), slice the meat off the sugar cane, wrap it with vermicelli, bean sprout, basil leaves, lettuce and rice paper roll.

The server recommended the Vietnamese pancake. Not too bad, but erm too many beansprout =/ yes at this very moment I can hear Ann screaming at me! 'You are sooo narrow minded! you need to open up your mind and learn to eat your greens! blah blah blah!!!' and I still maintained that 'you like it or you dont like it! nothing to do with being narrow-minded!' but yes i believe some food are what you call 'acquired taste', at this moment i still have not acquired the taste of bean sprout!
This was my main, pork chop with vermicelli! Piggy had pho! I should have just stuck to pho instead! Didn't enjoy the vermicelli, thought it was kind of plain. But oh well... yes yes keep an open mind.

After dinner we went for a walk and after our walk... yet again, we settled down for food! We end off our night with ice-cream at Kem Bach Dang. I ordered the mixed fruits ice-cream in coconut and piggy ordered the longan ice cream. We decided to make a switch after one mouth of our respective ice-cream. So in the end she had mine and I had her's.

Made a swift escape to Big D's Grill today. Have been having the strong urge to try this place since reading ieatishootipost.sg posting. I told myself I need, I must, I will have the Kurobuta Pork!

I was told I have to wait 20min for the chef to fire up the grill, hence I ordered the soup of the day, clam chowder, to keep me occupied. Clam chowder was ordinary, in fact a little diluted but I love the very 'garlicy' toasted bread.

Ohhh this is what i came for. For the sake of Lynn, she has ordered me to explain what IS the kurobuta.

Kurobuta are Berkshire Pigs. Berkshire pigs are rare breed of pigs originating from Britain. They are "Britain's oldest pig breed". Kurobuta (Black Pig) is the Japanese term of the Berkshire breed given to Japan by English diplomats in the 1800s. Like the Kurobuta beef's analogues (Wagyu Beef) the pork is well known for its superb meat marbling. The character Napoleon in George Orwell is a Berkshire. =)
Hmm so how do i find the cute black pig? First bite (with the fats) very tender, full of flavour, juicy, best piece of pork I have ever eaten. Second bite with the apple sauce that was given, wow! Perfect match of both the fatty meat and the tangy apple sauce, really wonderful complement! Match made in heaven! Third bite still very delicious. Fourth bite taste like Char Siew! Fifth bite, somehow without the fats the meat seems a little too dry and too salty for my palate. Tasted abit like smoked ham? Towards the end, I had to drown my meat in the apple sauce cos it was too salty and dry. As always the first two bites are always the best! Whatever it is, worth trying at least once!
One of the side was pumpkin mash, the other side I'm not too sure, some sort of beans I guess, maybe Pinto beans? Anyway the 'i dont know what' was certainly better than the pumpkin mash. Nevertheless both the sides were unique and good, not your usual french fries, bakes beans that you get in a kopi thiam stall.
Yes! this is the pinkish meat that is characteristic of Kurobuta!
Finally! Homemade dessert, Bonet! Mention ieatishoot and you get a free dessert worth $4 for every $30 spend. This I must say is the highlight of the meal! I am not someone with a sweet tooth, but this smooth, rich, bitter sweet chocolate pudding with caramel sauce is simply heavenly! It slides into the back of your throat and gives your mouth a sweet bitter feeling. Certainly more than satisfy my week long craving of dark chocolate!

For a hawker stall this is not cheap, Pork cost $36, but I guess if you are going to have the Black Pig in a restaurant, it will easily come up to about $50. This is a photoless entry cos the restaurant imposes a no-photography rule. Nevertheless I had to make this entry cos it is probably one of the more memorable restaurants I have been to this year. I don't know if it is memorable because of the yummy food or because of the long waiting list of reservation of this restaurant (A had to make a reservation 2 months in advance just so that R and I can eat here) or because A treated us to this meal! Btw thanks for the yummy treat! Plllleaassseee my turn next time!! Pleaaaseeee!!! Put time and place for our next makan outing.

I cant really remember the names of the food we had cos they were all 'chim' Italian fusion names. We had the set meal and we ordered another appetiser - tau kwa tower which is not bad.

The 1st course which was an appetiser from the chef was very tasty indeed! Thinking of it makes me drool! Of cos I didnt manage to catch the name. It is some mince beef on thin toasted bread slice, top with finely sliced apple and wasabi sauce.

Second course was a pomelo salad which was forgettable, then again I could be bias course I am NOT a green person. and YES! I hate tomatoes!

Third course was soup, something like Cannoli Beans with crab meat soup. Didn't really enjoy the soup, was kind of blend and tasted a little weird... or rather on the positive side, unique!

Fourth course was rock melon YU ZU (in other words those tiny mandarin orange) sherbet. Well.. i thought this was addictive, as much as I dont really fancy sherbet, but this one here with its unique blend of rock melon and tangerine hits the right spot! It opens up your appetite, cleanses your palate in preparation for the main course.

Fifth course, Entree, I had the Pork Saltimbocca with curry leaves sauce and something else which I cant remember. Very delicious indeed! R had the cod with rosemary crust and tamarind. It is good too, I especially love the crispy crust. The tangy taste of tamarind can be pretty subjective, if you are not someone who loves sour food, you probably wouldnt appreciate this. A had the mince beef mix with braised pork ravioli (they use wanton skin for the ravioli), not bad too! Thinking of it makes me drool even though I just had my dinner 15minutes ago.

Last course: dessert was milk chocolate cake, alas, this was disappointing! Erm but nevertheless I ate up every bit of the cake.

Finally our meal was accompanied by a bottle of white wine which complements the entire makan session. hmmm how I wish we could go back again... which means, call now and wait for 2 more months!

Day 1 - Part 2

This posting marks the second half of our major stoning day in HCM. This day is a walk, breathe carbon monoxide, eat, drink, stone, eat, eat, walk, stone, laugh, eat eat eat, take photos, eat day! I miss my story books! Should have brought along a story book to read, then again, I know i will probably end up stoning rather then reading. Pig brought along her work, travelled everywhere with it, but never seem to have done anything at all... despite her relentless 'bored bored bored I am borrreddd!'

Our next stoning pit stone takes us to Sofitel Saigon for a chocolate buffet!

The only proper photo I have of the chocolate buffet! The rest turn out too dark and yellow and boo hoo hoo i forgot to take a photo of the 'buffet spread'. The rather pathetic chocolate buffet spread that left me hungry at the end of our 3 hour stoning. Ohhh how i regret not taking a photo!
After the buffet, the sky was already dark and because it was drizzling we decided to take a cab to Diamond plaza, a spanking new shopping mall in the heart of HCM.

After shopping at the Supermarket, Parkson, we had dinner at the popular franchise PHO24 (there is an outlet in Millennia Walk, Singapore). My special bowl of Pho, with different parts of the cow.
Piggy likes fried stuff... so this is ordered specially to entertain her.
So this is the end of piggish day 1, dinner. Boring as it may seem, I think once in a while, we should be thankful that we are bored. Boredom is a blessing, can be a blessing, it is just a matter of perspective.

Day 1

Stayed at Chancery Hotel - an old retro hotel that has just been refurbished.

Woke up early on the first day, decided to take a short walk in the park just outside our hotel while piggy is bathing and getting ready for breakfast.

People in the park, jogging, playing tennis and exercising to the tune of 'I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world, wrap in plastic, its fantastic!'

Very plain and ordinary breakfast, but this omelet here is certainly THE saving grace. My cheese, onion and ham omelet, very yummy! I think it is the cheese that gives the omelet its yummy flavour and nice chewy texture.
Vietnam's national fruit - Dragon fruit. I love this! but piggy always have negative comments towards this poor innocent fruit. Her classic line "wahh you make the fruit looks so tempting, I shall go get some." [back with fruit] "eeee not nice!"

HCM popular market - Ben Thanh market, I wonder why do people rave about this market, it is just like another market in South East Asia, in fact much smaller than places like Chatuchak market.

After walking here, there everywhere, risking our lives, beating the traffic, we just had to chill a little bit, escape from the heat, before continuing on our journey. One of our chillout stops after booking a Mekong Delta tour from T.M. Bro Cafe. [If you are ever going to HCM, avoid this tour agency at all cost!]

Highland Cafe - an upmarket franchise cafe you can find all over HCM. You don't get Starbucks here, but you sure can find many Highland cafes.

Its been a while since i last blogged, nope it is not that I have stopped eating, in fact I have been eating too much! but well its more like I either forgot to bring my camera or I simply forgot about taking photos of my food and before i know it.. uh oh...

Anwyay Tucked away in a corner in Bukit Timah is a pretty little mall (erm actually it is not exactly a mall but well) - Railway Mall.

So here is tonight dinner:

Eggplant with sundried tomato, I don't eat egg plant nor tomato, so i can't pass a fair comment on this appetizer.

2nd appetizer. Yes yes! i know it looks more like a main course... nevertheless it IS an antipasto. I love the meatballs! well seasoned, roughly chopped meat. Almost perfect... well it would have been perfect if it is served a little warmer.
This is my main, cant really rem the name.. well it is something like squid ink blah blah blah with chilli, shrimps, garlic and broccoli. Didn't really fancy it, the pasta tasted like the chinese cze char 'Yi mee' and the overall flavour too oriental, yes! like some cze char with a twist.
My friend's main: lamb shank with coco pasta. I thought the lamb shank was pretty good, tender and full of flavour. Then again, people food always taste better...

Ohh if anyone has any idea how to a take photo such that it looks natural and not yellow (like the above) in a restaurant that has yellow lighting, please let me know. Or how do i go about editing such that it looks natural. Really dont know like yellowish tinge in the photos.

Deep fry the potatoes

Fry Indian curry paste (from market) till fragrant

Add chicken, Kaffir Lime leaves, Lemon grass and diluted coconut milk. Cook till chicken is 3/4 done. Add in salt and sugar. When chicken is done, add in the left over undiluted coconut milk! =) simple?

Bak Ku Teh soup... must buy pork ribs! only pork ribs. I love the innards!

Cooking method:

Fry lots of garlic, when it is brown, add in the spinach and the wolfberries. Add in some chicken stock.
Here is our complete dinner, and yes we eat brown rice these days.

Our appetiser - otah! Its yummy, at least it has visible fish bits in the otah. I wish it was a little warmer though.

Our long awaited Mee Pok! Almost an hour for this mee pok!
Of course it has to come with extra chili and lots of vinegar!
Verdict: I ate sooo fast that i couldn't really savour the food properly, but then again it is a mee pok stall that I eat quite often so I kind of know that I like the Mee Pok here, love the chili, love the al dente noodles but i wish they didn't dilute the vinegar. Yesh! I love my vinegar! Bring it on! Whatever it is certainly not worth an hour long wait! And my no 1 choice of mee pok is still Tai Wah mee pok at Crawford Lane
Poh Pia! Expensive at $2.50, and not particularly fantastic. Skin is soft and thin but I like my poh pia with the tiny little crunchy bits inside which is absent in this poh pia.
Final note: Please do not be lazy and park illegally outside! DARRN! I just got a parking summon for a bowl of noodles that I had to swallow!

Home-cooked snakehead fish noodles!

Ingredients:

Snakehead fish (belly, sides and cheeks) of course you can have the meat pieces, but I just love the belly and cheeks!

Thick Beehoon

Vegetables

Garlic (lots)

Hua Tiao wine

Chicken Stock

Cooking Method:

Fry the garlic, once it is golden brown throw in the fish and fry. Pour in a little chicken stock aka chicken bone soup)

Scoop it up when the fish is 3/4 cooked.

Next throw in more garlic and fry the noodles. Add a little oyster sauce and hua tiao wine to the noodles. Add chicken stock.

Once noodles is ready, throw in the fish again.

Finally throw in the vegetables!

Grill Herb Fish, didnt really like it... tasted kind of blend. But to be fair I dont like western grilled fish, I much prefer my traditional steam fish, teo chew style! Oh yes and i dont like filet I want my fish with head, skin bone and all!

Dinner gathering at Pu Tien! Our second dish (er ate up the first dish before i could remember to take a photo) This is the honey coated stir fried yam.

Fried eggplant with pork floss! I like this cos there is not a tinge of egg plant. I don't eat egg plant, but this is deep-fried and there is the pork floss to add to its flavour that you can't taste eggplant! As I like it!

Our disintegrated Honey Glazed Pork Ribs. It was only after we started to eat n smash it that i remember OOps i forgot to take a photo! Pork Rib comes with mei cai underneath. Dinner mates claim that the mei cai is tastier than the pork ribs. Personally I thought that the sauce was a little too sweet. Pork too fat.

The popular Heng Hwa noodles! Aiya forgot to add a dash of vinegar! I love the seaweed that comes with the noodles, gives it an added crispiness!
I think this is the sixth time that I had eaten here and I glad to say that I am still not tired of the food, food seems to have deteriorated over time especially the Heng Hwa Beehoon but nevertheless the dishes are still quite special. Then again maybe it is the company that makes this place special! Thanks ppl for putting up with my 'Oh wait I need to take photos" *click click click* food cold... "K we can eat now!"

I am not a fan of prawn noodle, but didnt know what to eat and i saw quite a number of people eating this, so well... no harm trying. Didn't really enjoy it, felt that soup was too diluted, blend, tasteless?! Hmmm my vote for Prawn nooodles (soup) still goes to the one at Pek Kio market - Wah Kee Big prawn noodle.

Friend had murtabak from the stall she says has 'light'?! whatever... I thought all stalls were lit up, yah but i did realise after a while that they do indeed have more lights than the other stalls... aka more decoration!

I was vvvvv full but somehow I succumb to Kenny Roger's when B suggested that we eat there before Kung Fu Panda. I know i know, many would say... 'eeee Kenny Roger's??!' but yes, I like Kenny Roger's for the baked beans! I used to like the chicken but somehow it has deteriorated over the years and Sat dinner was no exception, it was cold. And yes, I hate cold food, esp cold meat! But then again maybe it was due to the rather cold air con!

Yes YES! my 2 servings of baked beans! Like i mention before baked beans is one of my comfort food! and the baked beans as B quipped has a 'burnt' taste that I so love! And Yes! thanks BTFF for the free meal haaaa!

Our free bread. Came with Olive oil dip, too bad didn't come with vinegar.

Starters 1: Soft shell crab. I love the black pepper sauce that came with the crab, but R thought it was too overpowering. I on the other hand love that it is over powering... I love black pepper, white pepper... whatever pepper. Looks like Goreng Pisang.
Starter 2: Salmon Carpaccio. Not too bad, I guess I am bias towards smoked salmon.
R's Chai Poh (preserved Veggie) Chilean Seabass with congee. Really fusion man!
The Owl's crabmeat tomato cream linguini. Has a unique taste but its a little heavy. Nice if you do not consume excessively. This is obviously not a good place for photo-taking, a tad too dark. The linguini definitely taste better than it looks.

My lamb shank. Very ordinary, maybe I should stop eating lamb shank but I love lamb. Anyway they all taste the same to me =/ although I must say erm it is very tender, but then again, shouldn't all lamb shank be tender? hmmm. Bottomline, nothing spectacular.

Our dessert Chocolate Lava Gateau with vanilla ice-cream. We concluded that we preferred the one at Wine Company.

Friend had a $20 voucher for Sakae, so here we are... these are some photos that I took when i wasn't too lazy. I love how slice beef go with golden mushroom. Its one of those perfect match, match made in heaven =) First tasted this perfect union when i went for a BBQ at L's place. The one at Sakae is not too bad, just a little salty and the meat a little overcooked.

I like the Sashimi salad! Friend insisted that we must have this and yes, certainly a wise choice.
Well the usually Fried veggie.. errr (kakikage or something??)
Of cos these were not the only items we had, the rest were kind of ordinary and I was too hungry and lazy to take any photos. One thing for sure is that our appetite for Sakae sushi has shrunk tremendously, used to go for their buffets and used to spend at least $30 plus on sushi only... Imagine both of us are members of Sakae sushi! and how did we became members? we both consumed $200 in 3 months... that was i believe 5 years back... hai... now even though we arent consuming as much, but our weight has certainly faced an upward trend.

Have been craving for Wine Company Molten Lava Chocolate Cake for quite a while, so finally had the opportunity to skip down to Evans Road. Decided to eat lunch there too, so here was my main:

Jumbo Chicken Leg with Buttered Rice. Yes I like the sauce that came along with it, sort of like buttered mushroom sauce with pine nuts. Lately I seem to be having sauces top with pine nuts and I must say I love the woody flavour of the nuts. The butter sauce was a little heavy going though, definitely not for the health conscious and you get 'jerlat' from it. But overall, I love mushrooms, i like pine nuts, I love raisins and I love chicken. Oh but having said that, the chicken had a frozen taste to it... Maybe it is not economical to use fresh chicken... oh well... I would certainly like it even more if fresh chicken was used instead. Er... in case you wonder why I care whether it is fresh or frozen, well it is because I chew the cartilage of the chicken and once in a while the bones too ;P and when you chew the cartilage, you could immediately tell whether it is a fresh or frozen chicken.

Buttered rice tasted somewhat like chicken rice, but the raisins gave the rice texture and an added sweetness. The chef was pretty generous with the mushrooms and I am a happy girl as a result.
Friend had Fish and Chips, I thought it look a little like Fried Chicken. Well apparently according to friend it was not too bad. I tasted it, I thought the fishy taste was a little too strong. But nevertheless the good thing was the fish remain crispy even when cold =) It is not the battered kind that you get in errr Long John Silvers or even Swenson's more like the kind you get when you go to a coastal town in Australia, wrap in newspaper. I am not a fish and chips person, but I would love this fish and chips if it was served with vinegar! Maybe I would go for the Fish and Chips next time I am here and yes.. ask for vinegar! Then again, they have Lamb shank on the menu... I love Lamb. (seems like i Love... many things)
This is what I came for, molton Lava Chocolate Cake. Maybe I was too full or maybe there were only 2 of us to share, but I thought it didn't taste as good as my previous visit. The cake just wasn't warm enough. The cake itself was ordinary. Sure the melted chocolate oozes out...but it tasted a little powdery this time round... hmm maybe I was just too full. Too greedy. I think dessert like this should be shared among many, so that when you have not enough, you will crave for more. Err theory of marginal utility - the only thing i remembered from my JC Economics lesson.

There was hardly anyone when we were there. Nice place to wind down and chill out, should bring a book to read next time. Oh but it becomes really crowded in the night, especially on a weekend night.
Fren with little insulation from her fats claim that it was cold inside, decided to move outside. Still... there was hardly anyone.

Overall good chill out place, good food, value for money. Both mains were $14 each, chocolate cake was $10 and we had drinks, coke and ginger ale for $2.50 each. (er yah... we went wine company, but we didn't take any wine)

Price: what you see on the menu is what you pay... no service charge, gst is included in the prices you see on the menu... good yeah?

Had been wanting to eat Mexican food for the longest time ever. But I have no idea where to find good Mexican food in Singapore and I dont really know much about Mex food. The last time i ate at a Mexican restaurant in Singapore was a long long time ago.. maybe 6 years ago at Chico's n Charlie's. When i went to US for a while, I was stuffing myself silly with Mexican food, even when i went to Macs i was having the fajitas.. anyway I love anything with refried beans... I love refried beans just like how i love baked beans. Why do I love Mexican food? 'cos it is cheesy, mushy n messy... I love messy food just like when i eat economical rice 'cai fan' i love messing up my rice with the sides.

Chips were kind of blend, but then again maybe it was meant to be like that... i thought the sauce was a little blend and tasteless too, friend commented that it is a cheesy sauce that doesn't taste like cheese. But she gobble up the whole thing, so does it taste good? or was she simply not trying to waste food, I don't know.

This was my main... Kitchen Sink Burritos... the way i like it... MESSY BloB.. BUT one thing that really spoils the whole experience was the addition of parsley.. I HATE parsley, coriander anything close to it... It has such a strong n distinctive taste! Gross! Maybe I have ultra sensitive tastebuds, but i hate strong tasting veg like tomato, parsley, coriander, eggplant and lady's fingers. Anyway thank goodness the sauce on the burrito was good and tasty enough to cover the strong scent of parsley. Oh by the way I love tomato in its processed form but I simply hate tomatoes in its original state. Back to my burritos, I wished I could taste more of the refried beans... I should just order refried beans on its own next time...
Brownies for dessert.

I didn't like the taste of it on my first bite. I thought it had a hint of coconut. But subsequent bites weren't too bad if accompanied with the ice-cream. My conclusion is that you have to eat the brownie with the ice-cream and the chocolate sauce to enjoy this dessert. On its own, the brownie was a little dry. I missed my Wine Company warm chocolate cake =(
Overall it was a refreshing change to eat Mexican food after such a long time. The place was fully reserved when we got there, we were told that we need to leave by 830 and people with no reservation that came in after us were turned way. So please make your reservation especially on a weekend. Oh one thing, we were disturbed by the door bell that rang occasionally even though no one was entering nor existing the restaurant. Spooky...

K final note, this place is moving to Siglap soon. The whole place would be undergoing redevelopment in August I think, so watch out.
